Department of Technical Education Entry Requirements

Admission Regulations

U.M.E. Candidates

Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics,  Chemistry and one Science or Technical subject at the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC) or National Examination Council (NECO), National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB), Teachers’ College Grade II Certificate, General Certificate Examination (GCE) at the Ordinary Level or its equivalent at not more than two (2) sittings and; an acceptable pass mark at the UTME conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Direct Entry Candidates

Candidates seeking admission through this mode should, in addition to the UTME O’ Level requirements possess either of the followings;

(a) NCE with at least an overall pass at Merit/ Lower Credit level (CGPA of not less than 3.00) in any of the Building Technology related courses as a double major or in combination with other teaching subject.

(b) OND/ND with at least an overall pass at Upper Credit level (CGPA of not less than 3.50) in Building Technology related courses from a recognized Institution.

(c) NCE at Merit level (CGPA of 2.50 to 2.90)) in Building Technology related courses as a double major or in combination with other teaching subject with at least one year post-graduation teaching experience

(d)NCE at Pass level in Building Technology related courses as a double major or in combination with other teaching subject with at least two years post-graduation teaching experience

(e) OND/ND with at least an overall pass at Lower Credit level (CGPA of not less than 2.50) in Building Technology related courses from a recognized Institution with at least two years post-graduation teaching experience

(e) IJMB with an overall minimum performance as may be determined by JAMB and Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano for a given session.

(f) Advanced Level passes at Credit level in Building Technology related courses, plus any other relevant subjects listed under UTME requirements. State clearly the admission requirements for the proposed programme.  It must meet the general minimum admission requirement for degree programmes.

Post UTME Screening

All Candidates seeking admission into the Department irrespective of their UTME scores shall be required to pass the University post UTME Screening test before being admitted.

Registration Procedure

  • Each student must register and pay the appropriate registration fees at the beginning of each session according to the registration process in operation during that session and obtain from the department and academic office.
  • The registration process includes getting copies of relevant documents signed and submitted to all relevant places as may be advertised by the University, faculties and departments.
  • Returning students must complete the registration process within two weeks from the date registration commences.
  • A returning student who fails to complete the registration process within the two-week period approved for registration shall be deemed to be registering late and shall pay a late registration fee as may prescribed by the Department from time to time.
  • Returning student who fails to register within four weeks of commencement of the registration exercise shall not be allowed to register. Such a student shall be deemed to withdrawn, unless he/she provides a reason acceptable to the senate, in which case he/ she can be considered for suspension of studies.
  • A Fresh student must complete the registration process within two weeks of the close of the central registration of new students. Failure to complete the process within this time shall attract late registration fee charges, or forfeiture of the admission.
  • Deans of faculties and heads of departments shall ensure that the registration process is completed on time, that the process is clearly explained and publicized to the students, and that all staff members involved in the exercise maintain effective office hours so that students could see them without hindrance.

Duration of Programme

The undergraduate degree programme in two disciplines of the Department is based on the guidelines of the NUC Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS). The duration shall be as follows;

  1. a minimum of 8 Semesters (4 years) and a maximum of 12 semesters (6 years) through UTME and a minimum of 6 semesters (3 years) and a maximum of 10 semesters (5 years) through Direct entry.

Graduation Regulations

For a direct four year course in any of the programmes, a minimum of 123 credits units is required for graduation, while for direct three years course in any of the programmes, a minimum of 93 credits units is required for graduation. At the commencement of the programme, each student shall be furnished with the information specifying the requirements for the award of degree in the programme concerned.

Rules and Regulations

The Department of Technical Education rules and regulations are in line with the general rules and regulations of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano in both operation and definition of terms. Hence, all students are strongly advised to refer and adhere to the rules and regulations clearly stated in the University student’s handbook.
