The Department of Geography at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, established in 2012, stands as one of the pioneering departments of the institution. Since its inception, the department has successfully graduated hundreds of students who have gone on to pursue diverse careers both within and beyond Nigeria. The department boasts a dedicated faculty with expertise across various research domains, including human geography, physical geography, GIS and Remote Sensing, and regional geography. In support of academic and practical learning, the department is equipped with specialized laboratories, including those focused on physical geography, soil and water analysis, cartography, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These facilities are well-resourced, providing students with the necessary tools to excel in their studies. The department admits students who majored in science, social science, and art at the school level provided they have geography.

At the postgraduate level, the department offers a Ph.D. in Geography, with specializations in Natural Resources Management, Environmental Management, Physical Geography, and Human Geography. M.Sc. in Rural Development and Natural Resources Management, focusing on sustainable development and resource management in rural settings. M.Sc. in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), designed to equip students with advanced skills in spatial data analysis and GIS applications.

Additionally, the department offers a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Remote Sensing and GIS, providing an opportunity for professionals or graduates from related fields to gain expertise in these cutting-edge technologies.
