VC receives CIBN President

The Vice-Chancellor of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa has received the President and Chairman of Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Dr. Bayo Williams Olugbemi.

Receiving the President and his team in his office, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mukhtar Atiku Kurawa welcomed and thanked the President and his team for the visit, describing it as timely considering his administration’s determination to improve the linkages of the University and other organisations with a vi view to developing the university.

While noting the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University and CIBN, the Vice-Chancellor assured them that the synergy between the two institutions would be strengthened.

‘I pledge to strengthen the existing relationship between the University and CIBN,’’ he maintained.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted some of the accomplishments of the university under his leadership which include approval by the National Universities Commission to commence 45 postgraduate programmes in the university and other undergraduate programmes.

The University has a good ranking by NUC as all its undergraduate programmes have fully been accredited.

The Vice-Chancellor told them that plans are on top gear for establishment of Faculty of Law in the University.

He said in their effort to develop the University, they embarked on outreach to source intervention, explaining that CBN was currently building female and male hostels in the university, among other interventions by several organisations.

Prof. Kurawa also informed the visitors of his achievements when he held sway as Rector of Kano State Polytechnic which include securing full accreditation of all programmes, mounting of 15 new programmes and establishment of Micro-Finance Bank, among other successes.

Earlier in his address, the President and Chairman of Council of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Dr. Bayo Williams Olugbemi hailed the Vice-Chancellor for granting them audience.

‘’We also commend the prevalent atmosphere of peace and harmony among all stakeholders in the University community,’’ the president said.

According to him, they are in Kano for very auspicious reasons.

‘’The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria introduced a novel scheme called the Linkage Programme in collaboration with tertiary institutions in Nigeria in the year 1998.

‘’The Linkage Programme was designed to deepen banking and finance education by infusing professional element into the teaching-learning process, with a view to addressing the gap between the industry and the academia in terms of quality of graduates produced from our higher institutions.

‘’To further deepen this collaboration, the Governing Council of our great Institute resolved to institute legacy projects in six linkage institutions across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria.

‘’The beneficiary institution in the North-West Zone is Kano State Polytechnic, Kano and will be bequeathed with 160-seater lecture theatre that will be fully furnished and equipped with ultra-modern gadgets.

‘’The edifice which will be known and called ‘THE CIBN BANKERS HALL’ will serve as the melting pot for the training and development of future-ready bankers.

‘’Also, to engage with our critical stakeholders and the banking community in the State, with a view to ensuring growth and development of the banking and finance sector in Kano State,’’ he stated.

The President further requested for support and collaboration on Consummation of the MSc/ACIB linkage collaboration programme, a novel programme that offers the students dual qualification of MSc and ACIB upon completion of the programme.

Engagement of ACIB Holders as academic Staff at the related departments in the Faculty of Social & Management Sciences- Banking & Finance, Economics &Business Administration.

The Institute is open to further collaboration with the University on knowledge events for stakeholders.
