Prof. S. Garba was born and brought up in Kano State. He started his early western education at Tudun wada Primary School in 1977, Nassarawa Local Government. He later went to Kano Teacher’s College (KTC) from 1983 to 1986 and Government Senior Secondary School Gwammaja One from 1986 to 1989. On completion of his secondary education, he went to College of Art, Science and Remedial studies (CAS), Kano for preliminary studies. Prof. A. S Garba attended Bayero University Kano at different occasions where he obtained B.Sc Business Administration in 1998, Masters in Business Administration in 2004 and Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 2009. He also had his doctorate degree (PhD) in Entrepreneurship/Management in 2013 from University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS).
S. Garba is promoted to the rank of Professor with effect from 1st January 2021 by the Governing Council of Yusuf Maitama Sule University Kano, where he is now serving as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration). Before his appointment to this position, he served the University in many positions. He was the Director of Academic Planning, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Deputy Dean and substantive Head of Business Administration Department. Before joining the University in 2014, he worked at Kano State Polytechnic where he rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer.
He is presently serving as a member of the University Senate and the Governing Council. Similarly he was appointed to serve in many committees of the University on various assignments. Among other Committees he chaired are Senate Appeals Committee, University Annual Report Committee, University Housing Committee, Staff Welfare Committee, University Sports Advisory Committee, Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee and Council Committee on IGR. Before joining the University, he was the Secretary of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Kano from 2006 to 2008 and later became Chairman of the same Union between 2008 and 2009. While serving as the Chairman ASUP, he equally led the Joint Consultative Forum (JCF) of Kano State Tertiary Institutions to agitate for the improvement of teaching conditions and academic staff welfare. He is currently the President of the Yusuf Maitama Sule University Staff Multi-purpose Cooperative Society with over 700 members.
Prof. Garba has been teaching Management and Entrepreneurship courses and conduct research in the same area. He had been a visiting lecturer at the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Federal University Kashere, Gombe State and part time lecturer at Kaduna State University for various postgraduate programmes. He has been supervising both undergraduate and postgraduate students’ projects. He has several articles to his credit which were published in both local and foreign reputable journals, and co-edited and published two books. He has attended various academic and professional conferences in both Nigeria and overseas. He serves on Editorial Board of some reputable journals such as International Journal of Sustainable Development and World Policy, European Journal of Management Sciences, International Journal of Public Policy and Administration Research, Nigerian Journal of Business and Entrepreneurial Development, Northwest Journal of Social and Management Sciences, Northwest Multi-disciplinary Journal.
Prof. Garba has been delivering lectures on entrepreneurship and management issues at various fora and engages in various community activities. Among others, he was recently involved in Governance Committee for Annoba Project on the Challenges of COVID 19 in Kano and Jigawa State under the auspices of Kano-Jigawa Professionals Forum. He is also serving member of Education Committee of Muryar Alummar Nassarawa charged with the responsibility of Developing a Strategic Plan on Education for the Association.
Garba engages in consultancy services, He is one of the consulting partners at Overone Consult and Investment Limited and Principal Consultant at Whitepen Consulting Limited. Between 2017 and 2019, he served as one of the Independent consultants monitoring GEM project funded by World Bank which was implemented by Federal Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism. He is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC) and an Accreditor of Higher Institutions and programmes (Management Science and Entrepreneurship) certified by the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi-Africa) and African Quality Assurance Network (AfriQAN)
Similarly, he belongs to various professional bodies such as The Academy of Management of Nigeria, a fellow of the Institute of Management Consultant, Nigeria, member of the Chartered Institute of Global Communication and Diplomacy and the Nigerian Institute of Management where he is serving as Council member, Northwest Zonal Chairman and member of Board of Examiners. He loves reading, watching football and playing golf.
