The Department of Chemistry is among the pioneer Departments of the Faculty of Science, and has been in existence since the establishment of the University. The Department initially coordinates both B.Sc. Chemistry and B.Sc. Biochemistry programmes, before the establishment of Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences in the year 2014.
Prof. Amina Salihi Bayero was the pioneer Head of Department from 2013 to 2015, followed by Dr. Ya’u Datti from 2015 to 2019, and Dr. Isa Baba Koki from 2019 to 2023, both have significantly contributed to the development of Chemistry Department and the University at large. Presently, the Department is run under the leadership of the fourth Head of Department in person of Prof. Salihu Abdullahi Kiyawa.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Department is to create an atmosphere that shall maximize creativity and enquiry in the conduct of undergraduate studies. This is achieved through rigorous training and industrial applications to collectively uplift the status and ranking of the Yusuf Maitama Sule University in comparison to other world Universities.
